    Le matériau le plus couramment utilisé pour les guidages linéaires est l'acier. Il est généralement fabriqué avec une grande précision, puis calibré pour une application spécifique. Les plaques d'appui présentent des transitions douces et peuvent supporter des charges croissantes à mesure qu'elles deviennent convexes. Cette conception les rend idéales pour l'usinage de l'acier.
    Bien que le rail linéaire offre une capacité de charge supérieure, le système de glissières à caissons reste relativement compact. Ces glissières supportent des charges plus importantes que les rails à queue d'aronde, mais ne permettent pas d'atteindre des vitesses de déplacement élevées. Elles sont également réputées pour leur meilleure capacité à réduire les vibrations.
    Les principaux composants d'un système de guidage linéaire sont le chariot principal et les roulements. Ils intègrent des vis sans fin et des roulements à billes. La principale différence entre les deux réside dans le fait que les roulements à billes comportent des éléments roulants permettant de réduire le frottement. Ces roulements offrent également une grande sensibilité. Le frottement entre l'élément roulant et le rail est par ailleurs faible.
    Les glissières à caisson offrent une meilleure capacité d'amortissement des vibrations. Cependant, elles ne sont pas idéales pour les applications grand public. De plus, elles sont beaucoup plus coûteuses que les guidages linéaires. Ce surcoût est compensé par leur faible besoin d'entretien. Il est donc recommandé d'utiliser les systèmes de glissières à caisson pour les applications exigeantes.
    Les rails linéaires constituent une alternative pratique aux rails à caissons. Cependant, ils doivent être entièrement soutenus lors du montage. Ils nécessitent également une lubrification plus fréquente. De plus, ils peuvent être endommagés par l'eau et certains solvants. Enfin, ils doivent être protégés pendant le transport.
    Les glissières prismatiques sont utilisées dans certaines machines de grande taille, tandis que les glissières linéaires sont employées dans les machines de plus petite taille. Ces types de rails sont généralement utilisés par les centres d'usinage produisant des pièces. Ils peuvent également être utilisés dans les machines d'ébauche.
