Ball screws use recirculating rolling elements; lead screws rely on sliding contact between screw and nut. That affects efficiency, friction, backlash strategy, heat and maintenance behavior.

Speed and duty cycle matter

A screw that works for an occasional adjustment may not suit a high-cycle axis. State travel speed, duty cycle and motor speed before choosing pitch or lead.

Accuracy is not a single number

Separate positioning accuracy, repeatability, axial play/backlash and stiffness. A tighter requirement in one area can change the screw manufacturing method, preload and support arrangement.

Use total installed cost

Include bearings, end machining, coupling, motor sizing, lubrication and integration work rather than comparing only the screw-and-nut purchase price.
